Basingstoke Town are proud to announce the signing of defender Callum Winchcombe.
The 18 year old joins us from Swindon Town after seven years at the club. He made his professional debut at the age of 17 against Newport where they went on to win 1-0. He also featured in squads during league games against Plymouth and Colchester.
Callum has featured in a number of our pre-season friendlies already this year and his qualities in and out of possession have been clear to see.
“I first came across Callum after being introduced to his Dad, Mark, by a couple of mutual friends.” Dan Brownlie noted “After learning about his exit from Swindon and hearing a detailed overview of the type of player and person Callum is – it was a no brainer to take a look at him. That said, I’ve taken on players from pro-clubs in the past and had similar reviews. Fortunately for us, Callum has not just lived up to those reviews, he’s exceeded them. Whilst he has all the trademark qualities of a player trained in an elite academy environment – what separates him in this moment, is his mentality. He’s got a real steeliness about him. He’s not a shouter by any means, but he has a coldness to him which all great winners have.”
“It gives us another great option across our defensive line. We’re starting to add much better depth and with that, competition – which is a real positive. We’re really pleased Callum has chosen to join us. He’s got great people around him which counts for an awful lot. It’s a great testament to the club that another exciting young talent has trusted us with their continued development.”
Callum will be part of the match day squad that takes on Farnham Town on Tuesday evening. 7.45pm KO.
