Basingstoke Town FC Women Do The Double

Basingstoke Town FC Women 2-2 Gosport Borough Ladies FC (Basingstoke Town won 3-2 on penalties)

Basingstoke Town FC Women took the game to a shootout to clinch the Hampshire Junior Cup, completing a successful league and cup double.

In front of a 200+ strong crowd, Basingstoke Town FC Women found themselves behind at the half hour mark when a through ball was converted by Gosport Borough Ladies. ‘Stoke found themselves two goals behind before half-time despite Erin Davis’ penalty save after Gosport managed to double their lead at the third attempt.

Basingstoke came out the stronger in the after half time with Dot Usher pulling one back early in the second half with a neat finish. It was wave after wave of ‘Stoke attack and it was only a matter of time before Katie Randell pulled ‘Stoke back level with a looping shot from the far post.

Following 90 minutes of play with the score-line level, it was going to be penalties to decide the eventual winners and it was ‘Stoke shot stopper Erin Davis who saved 3 penalties to help Basingstoke Town FC Women claim victory.

Manager Nathan Cookson was delighted with the win “It’s great to be able to celebrate our season on the pitch after not really being able to do that with the way the league has panned out but the girls were a real credit and showed the fighting spirit that they have done all season with a positive attitude, never wanting to give up.”

“I’d also like to thank everyone who came down to support us this afternoon and to those who’ve been there with us throughout the season”.
