Basingstoke got their pre-season campaign underway with a convincing 9-2 win versus North Greenford FC. The Ealing based side who play in Combined Counties League Premier Division North travelled for a 2pm kick off and were warmly welcomed by our match day volunteers and Academy players who were helping on the day.
Basingstoke effectively fielded two separate sides with a complete change at half time other than goalkeeper Julian Schwarzer and a trialist who took up a different position.
Dan Brownlie commented:
“We were a little rusty in areas, but that was always going to be the case this early on in pre-season, but that said, there was an awful lot to like too. We said before the game that the focus was to be on work rate and getting minutes in the legs, but also making sure we gave ourselves the opportunity to enjoy the game but with equal importance – giving the fans something entertaining to watch – everyone has been starved from live football for so long and it was important that we put on as much of a show as we could. The scoreline alone would suggest we achieved that!
“It was great to see so many of our supporters back and it was nice to have the chance to catch up with a few, we’re sure over the coming weeks the crowds will start to build as this is a group of boys that we think fans can really get behind.”
“There were some really good performances out there, particularly from a some of our youngsters. We now look forward to our next game away at Andover New Street on Tuesday who will provide a different test, offer another opportunity to build up fitness levels and gives us a chance to take a look at one or two things in terms of shape and personnel.”
A big thank you to all of our volunteers who made an environment that was both welcoming and safe for all our guests and supporters.
Basingstoke travel to Andover New Street for a 7.45pm Kick Off.
