New Academy Captains Announced

Basingstoke Town FC are delighted to announce our newest full-time academy captains who are taking over the role from Aiden Harris on completion of the educational year.

Sam Barlow and Shay Barham, have been chosen for the new captaincy partnership for the full time 16-19 academy. A honour of which both deserve and are looking forward to representing Basingstoke both on the pitch and off it in the community.

We caught up with both Sam and Shay for there thoughts on the new responsibilities they have been awarded:

Sam Barlow
“Honestly? It’s an honour to be given the opportunity to lead the Basingstoke Academy with Shay. It’s going to be a great season next year and I am absolutely buzzing to get started and give my absolute all to the team on and off the pitch. I can’t wait to get started. Up the stoke!!”

Did you know:
Sam Barlow was awarded the BTFC youth team player of the year back in 2018 after leading the U15’s to the National cup final.

Shay Barham
“It’s an honour to be asked to share the captaincy with Sam. I’m absolutely buzzing to get started with all the new players coming through as first years and keep playing well with all the current 2nd and 3rd years! I’m sure as a centre-back partnership we can both have a really good season together. I’m obviously really happy with the news and I feel it will push Sam and I to better ourself week in week out! I really appreciate the opportunity and I’m ready to give 110%, be a role model and a better player for myself and the team. The only way is up from now on!”

Did you know:
Shay at the tender age of 16 has been out getting experience of men’s football at step 5 Tadley Calleva. A bright future for the young man.

Aaron Nicholson’s thoughts :
“It’s been a very tough choice as to who got the captaincy. There are numerous lads who could have been picked; but after conversations with Aiden Harris the current academy captain, Ben Wright our education tutor and Mikey Davis our academy coach – we all came to agreement that Sam and Shay were both perfect candidates.

Not only do Sam and Shay play Centre back together , the boys have a big impact off the pitch with the boys and have a very bright future in front of them. Both will tell you they have lots to improve on, both on and off the pitch but they have a willingness to work hard and learn and this new responsibility will only push them further.

Filling Aiden Harris boots will be a tough ask for anyone, but as a club we have full confidence in both Sam and Shay and hope the next two season will see them and the academy grow from strength to strength.”

Congratulations Shay & Sam; we’re looking forward to seeing your continued progression with the club.
