“Bill was ‘The Poppy Man’ of Basingtoke, he organised the Remembrance Sunday parade. He organised the delivery of every box of poppies in the Basingstoke district and the collectors throughout the town. He did this for many years despite his poor health.
Years ago when it dawned upon me that there was no representation from the football club, It was Bill who gave me advice. We became friends and in the end we had a fair few of the supporters helping to deliver the boxes of poppies across town
Bill always kept and eye on the club even before this , his football love came from his own North East background. Bill always helped with getting us the required Poppy wreaths , including those delivered on the Somme and in Flanders. He was a real gent. It sums it up that one in one season , I sponsored a game out of my own pocket in the name of the Royal British Legion, the idea was so that he could attend the game as a guest of honour… he was too busy collecting for the Legion!”
