Ben Wright’s brace secured a place in the next round of the Hampshire Senior Challenge Cup.
Martin Kuhl watched over his first game in charge for the club against local rivals Hartley Wintney as they strolled to victory.
After a congested start to the game Wright opened the scoring as the ball ended up at his feet after a Sam Deadfield corner, and the forwards strike seem to bobble off the goalkeeper’s hand and roll into the bottom corner.
Then at the other end the home side were attacking when captain Charlie Kennedy made a goal saving tackle inside the area.
Sam Argent then doubled the dragons lead after a whipped cross from Sam Smart found the former Hartley Wintney forward who had time to take a touch and stroke it home.
Another great build up down the right hand side saw Dean Stow curl a cross to the back post where he found Zidan Akers free, unfortunately he couldn’t get his head over it and nodded it over.
HALF TIME 0-2
Basingstoke continued to put the pressure on in the second half as Deadfield’s corner found Shane Hollamby who headed just wide.
Romario Hart halved the deficit after clever build up play found him one on one with Colm McAdden and he slid the ball past him.
Immediately after, Basingstoke once again attacked and all three forwards combining with Smart finding Argent who played it into Wright who curled it around the keeper and edged the away side one step closer to the next round.
Jack Ball had the chance to put the home side back into it with a free header from a set piece but his header went tantalizingly over.
Before the game could finish Akers beat the offside trap and was one on one with the goalkeeper, who was forced into making a stunning save down to his right.
Hart once again had a chance to double his tally after squeezing between two defenders but alert goalkeeping from McAdden kept him out.
