Basingstoke lost for the second time in three days as Dorchester came out of a tight contest with a 1-0 win. An unmarked Ollie Griggs settled a game of few chances with a deft header after David Jerrard had been afforded plenty of space to curl in a cross from the left.

Both sides entered the match if the back of defeats on opening day and needed a reaction. Basingstoke had lost 3-1 to Frome while Dorchester went down 5-1 at Banbury.

It was scrappy first half with few chances from open play. David Jerrard tested Colm McAdden with a free kick while Jack Storey glanced a header wide from the resulting corner. At the other end Basingstoke struggled to turn several free kicks and corners into meaningful chances, although Marcus Johnson-Schuster turned a volley wide of the near post.

David Jerrard went close again just before half time for the hosts as a looping volley from range caught McAdden off his line but bounce just wide of the far post.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first but ten minutes into it Basingstoke had a strong handball appeal in the penalty area turned down following a corner. It wasn’t long after that Dorchester got their goal though, Jerrard had the time and space to shift the ball onto his right foot and produce an inswinging cross that found Griggs in space and the midfielder made no mistake with his header.

Basingstoke had to press on and Sam Smart had two good chances, firstly a shot blocked inside the area after he’d taken down a good cross from George Bennett, and then Aaron Jarvis caught out Chris Weale, taking the ball round him and pulling it back into the box, but Smart failed to hit the target. Dorchester got men back behind the ball to try to protect their lead and it turned out to be enough once Weale had parried Ben Wright’s free kick and Johnson-Schuster had been denied a tap in by a crucial last ditch challenge from Ross Carmichael.
