Ben Wright’s beautifully delicate free-kick was not enough as Basingstoke fell to defeat in the Hampshire FA Senior Cup final.

Just before half-time Wright lifted a glorious free-kick up and over the wall but a late header from Rutherford ended Basingstoke’s chance of being Hampshire Champions.

Basingstoke almost got off to the best possible start, as Michael Atkinson got the ball into the net but was penalised for offside within the first minute.

Then Sam Smart broke through the defence but his shot was blocked by Ben Dudzinski.

Once again Dudzinski was forced into a save this time Yvan Jourdan had the chance to put the stoke ahead but his effort was tipped agonisingly wide.

Havant and Waterlooville took the lead just after the half an hour mark as Josh Huggins broke free and lifted it over Tom McGill.

Wright equalised with the final attack of the first half as he lifted the ball over the wall and into the goal.

HALF TIME 1-1.

The first chance of the second half fell to left-back Adam Everiss as his drive from outside the area moved in the air but went just over.

Smart then cut in from the right-hand side but he curled his effort over the bar.

A controversial moment in the game as Basingstoke were claiming a penalty for handball, but the referee gave a free-kick in a similar position to the goal.

Unfortunately this time Wright’s effort was curled past the post.

A huge save from McGill as he blocked the on rushing forward and tipped the ball away from danger.

Then Rutherford’s header evaded everyone and put Havant and Waterlooville ahead.

Second half substitute Harry Pearse’s first involvement was having his shot blocked on the line in a frantic goal mouth scramble.

With moments to go Rutherford lifted the ball over McGill but his effort hit the post then the bar.

FULL TIME 1-2.
