Sam Deadfield’s first half goal was not enough as a late double for Hartley Wintney threw Basingstoke Town out of the League Cup.
A second half penalty was missed by Deadfield as Basingstoke were one down at the time and would go on to lose by a three-goal margin.
Aaron Redford had two early chances forcing Craig Bradshaw into good saves but unfortunately was forced off just 10 minutes into the game with injury.
The away side took the lead after 20 minutes as Josh Webb curled a free-kick up and over the wall, finding the roof of the net.
Then Mickel Platt doubled the away side’s lead as he was found in the box by Salhin Abubakar and slid the ball past Colm McAdden.
Captain for the night Deadfield halved the deficit just before the break with clever feet just inside the area and curled it into the bottom corner.
HALF TIME: 1-2
A huge chance started the second half as Shane Hollamby headed just over from a few yards out, after a wonderful cross from Sam Smart.
Smart was then fouled in the box late on and won a penalty. Deadfield stepped up but the spot kick was saved down low as the game headed towards the last ten minutes.
Hartley Wintney winger Salhin Abubakar scored a quickfire brace with just seven minutes left. The first came when a speculative effort found the near corner outside the box.
The second one came when he was left open in the box and the cross from the right side found its way to the far post for him to tap it in.
