Sam Smart’s brace ensured yet another convincing victory for Jason Bristow’s men during a pre-season drubbing over Fleet Town.
Fleet started the game much more positively after two mistakes from Brendan Norris’ clearances but the keeper was not punished by them.
With seven minutes on the clock Charlie Osborne opened the scoring with a strike outside the area. Fleet’s goalkeeper could only palm it into the net.
Sam Argent got in behind the defence and squared it to George Bennett who had an open goal at his disposal but couldn’t get a good enough contact on the ball and put it wide.
Sam Smart played a wonderful one-two pass with Argent and only had the keeper to beat. He slotted his shot in bottom corner to double the away sides lead.
Bennett played a defence splitting pass through to Smart who drilled the shot which had to be dealt with and won the corner. From the resulting corner Guri Demuria headed home from close range.
Basingstoke Town made it 4-0 from another corner. This one ending on the boot of Argent who deserved a goal for his hard work. A strong volley smashed home.
More impressive play from the young forward Smart when he closed down the centre-back and goalkeeper of Fleet forcing a weak clearance out to Argent who’s shot beat the keeper but came off the bar and out to Bennett who headed it home.
HALF TIME: 0-5
Smart got his brace around the 52nd minute mark after a strong run into the box getting past three Fleet defenders and finishing comfortably.
Callum Bunting, a half time substitute, had two chances to score from a corner forcing the keeper into smart saves.
Fleet had the better of the second half without creating too much. In the final attack Fleet had a free-kick down their left-hand side. The free-kick made it through the wall and it was a good save from Norris to protect his clean sheet.
