Sam Argent’s goal was not enough as the home side fell to a defeat.

Basingstoke were beaten by table toppers Weymouth in a close encounter at the Camrose.

The first chance of the game fell to the inform Argent around two yards out but managed to blaze the ball over the bar from a strong Ben Wright cross.

Argent then had another chance as the ball was played through by Sam Deadfield with a perfectly weighted pass, but the striker’s effort was saved by Jordan Seabright.

Abdulai Baggie had the first chance for the visitors but his shot went  just wide.

The home side then took the lead as Sam Smart danced his way past the defender and crossed it in low to Argent who tapped it in.

Right after taking the lead, Dean Stow hit the post after more pressure from the home side as the ball fell to him outside of the box and his low shot clipped the post and went wide.

Just before half time Brandon Goodship equalised as his shot from outside of the area looped over Colm McAdden.

HALF-TIME: 1-1

Basingstoke’s first chance of the second half came when Wright’s free kick beat the wall and forced the goalkeeper into a good save.

The forward then headed over from yards out as Jack McKnight found Wright with a floated cross.

Ben Thomson made it 1-2 as a long ball was flicked on to Goodship and he found his forward in the box who slotted it into the net.

Smart had a chance to equalise but his shot on his weaker foot curled just wide.

In stoppage time the debutant Mitchell Parker was found with a ball over the top but his shot went just over as his stretched out for the ball.

Then in the final minute Shane Hollamby headed over from a Smart corner.
