Basingstoke Town Football Club fans’ favourite Stokie the Dragon is taking on a new personality. The beloved mascot will undergo a Doctor Who-like regeneration, as previous incumbent Richard Midgley steps aside and newcomer Nigel Keyte takes over.
“I’ve had a fantastic few years as caretaker of my good friend Stokie,” said Richard. “We competed together in the Mascot Olympics – and even completed this year’s London Marathon in aid of The Children’s Trust. It’s been great. “Now I think it’s time for someone else to come in and give Stokie another dimension to his personality. And I’m very pleased to handover to Nigel.” The task of continuing Stokie’s reputation as a real crowd pleaser is a daunting but exciting one for the incoming Nigel.
“This is fantastic for me because I’m a huge fan of Stokie. Which self respecting Basingstoke FC fan wouldn’t be? I’ve even had a special dragon tattoo done, to celebrate my new role,” he said. “I’m looking forward to meeting everyone on matchdays for the rest of the season – and I’m excited to be helping Stokie create the perfect atmosphere to spur the team on to plenty of wins.”
On behalf of everyone at the club Basingstoke Town FC Chairman Rafi Razzak, would like to publically thank Richard Midgley for bringing Stokie to life and his dedication as the long serving ‘friend’ of Stokie.
